The River Rhine, top 3 cities to visit part 2
68Overview
This is the second in my "Rhine River, top 3 cities to visit", hub series. Bonn was in the British Zone, when the WWW II ended and became the provisional Capital of West Germany. It remained so from 1949 to 1990. Because of it's small size, for a Capital, it was often referred to as the Bundesdorf - Federal Village. The reunification of Germany in 1990, made Berlin the nominal Capital , and in 1991 after putting it to a vote, Berlin again became the Capital, while Bonn remained the official Seat of Government from 1990 to 1999. In 1998 many National Government Institutions moved from Bonn to Berlin, including the Bundestag and Bundesrat, the Chancellery and the residency of the President of Germany.
On a lighter note, Bonn is the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven whose home is now a museum; is the home of a famous University whose main building was once the electorial palac; and where one will find the "Rheinpromenada", Bonns Rhine Promonade, the longest river promenade along the Rhine River. On weekends both sides of the river will be filled with cyclists, walkers and rollerbladers as it goes past the "Leisure Park Rheinaue and many nice beer gardens. Another feature of the promenade, one can go down one side, take the ferry across and return on the other side.
Main sights
1. Ludwig Von Beethoven was born was born in Bonn in 1767 at Bonngasse 20, the building now houses the Beerhoven-Haus a museum with a collection of portraits, original manuscripts, instruments, and everyday objects.
2. Post Tower is the headquarters of the Deutsche Post DHL the world's largest logistic group which has about 8 different areas, of which the mail department delivers approximately 70 million letters in germany, six days per week. Behind the Post Tower is a large park, a popular destination for walkers from the city center using the Rhine pormenade.
3. Museum Mile is of particular interest to museum lovers, as there are at least nine museums located there, among which are -
a. Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, an Srt and Exhibition Hall
b. Kunstmuseum Bonn - Museum of Modern Art.
c. August-Macke-Haus, dedicated to the exprissionist painter, August Macke, who produced over 400 works.
d. Arboretum Park Harle, a botanical garden on the slopes of the Rhine Valley, dating back to 1870. It is open twice a month in the warmer months.
e. Alter Zoll a customs house located on the south east corner of the medevial city. In former days it was used to collect the levy from vessels on the Rhine. Visitors will get a spectacular view of the area all the way to the Rhine, there is also a monument to Ernst-Moritz-Arndt a famous citizen of Bonn who died in 1865.
f. The Bonn Altstadt - "Old Town" Has a multitude of pubs and restaurants; the "Kunstcarre" - the Artists Square; the Women's Museum; the Art Forum; the Deutsche Museum Bonn; and the Voluntary Organisation of the United Nations which is situated by the Rhine River.
g. The Rheinaue Freizeitpark - leisure park - has a lake and a flee market which takes place every third Sunday of the month.
h. The Museum Koenig is a natural history museum whose exhibits re-create an entire "habitat" with theatrical flourishes, elephants drinking at waterholes, a jaguar holed up with it's kill and vultures surveying the scene from above.
i. At the end of November each year the Christmas markets open, an event that draws a large crowd, not only from the local area, but from all over Germany and even the USA.
In summary
While Bonn may not be as large as some of Germany's other cities, it has many historic and modern day places to visit. It can be reached via the Autobahns - the federal motorways; on the German rail system, and the Intercity Express and Intercity trains.
The closest airport to bonn is the Cologne-Bonn airport, an airport bus leaves every 30 minutes going directly to the central bus station. From there one can get a taxi to all hotels. There is also a train from the airport to Bonn-Beuel, which is on the opposite side of the river.
A more scenic trip is to take the train from Bonn to Frankfurt, this is especially popular, as it runs along the side of the Rhine river, it is, however, a slower more scenic way to get between the two cities taking about 2 hours.
